Our story
South Mornington Football & Netball Club was established in 2002, born from a vision to build a strong, community-driven club in the heart of Mornington.
The club took its first major step as a senior entity in 2005, fielding a reserves team in the Southern Football League. Momentum quickly followed, with South making the move to the Victorian Amateur Football Association (VAFA) in 2007, entering two teams and marking the beginning of sustained growth.
That growth was rewarded in 2012, when South Mornington’s senior football side reached the pinnacle with a Grand Final victory — a defining moment in the club’s history and a testament to the culture, commitment and resilience that continue to drive the club forward.
From humble beginnings to continued expansion across football and netball, South Mornington remains proud of where it started and focused on what’s ahead.

VALE: JAKE ROLLS
South Mornington footballer Jake Rolls sadly lost his battle with cancer during the 2011 finals series and the club is keeping his memory alive through their work with the charity Whatever It Takes.
At South Mornington, we all knew and loved Jake Rolls. For those who were not fortunate enough to know him, this is part of his story.
Jake played both junior and senior football at South Mornington and, in 2010, was awarded Best Finals Player in the Reserves. That same year, at just 20 years of age, Jake was diagnosed with melanoma on his neck. After undergoing radiotherapy and multiple surgeries, he was later struck again when cancerous cells were found in his lungs, liver and spine. In early 2011, a further scan revealed a brain tumour.
One of Jake’s goals during his battle with cancer was to complete the Stand By You Hepburn Challenge on 22 October 2011. Jake said:
“I have had so much emotional and practical support from others to help make my life a little easier on a daily basis. They have given me quality in my life. It is so good not to have to worry about paying the bills all of the time while you are out of work. You can concentrate on trying to get well again. When I saw the flyer for the Hepburn Trail Challenge, I could see how we had the opportunity to help raise funds for other people in my circumstance who have not been as lucky as I have.”
Sadly, Jake passed away on 19 September 2011 and was unable to complete the Hepburn Challenge. However, his dream of helping others lived on, with his team raising over $5,000 in his honour.
The courage, determination and strength Jake showed throughout his battle with cancer continue to inspire all who knew him. Thinking of Jake helps his family and friends push through life’s challenges. Yet it was his giving nature that left the greatest impression. At a time of his own despair, Jake still thought of others — instead of saying “poor me,” he asked, “what about them?”
In 2011, the inaugural Players’ MVP award was created and named in Jake’s honour. The recipient of this trophy has the privilege of wearing the number 1 jumper — the same number Jake proudly wore during his time at South Mornington.
